In 2016 the Tea Smith 1 course was accredited by the BIIAB, allowing The London School of Tea to become the first UK institution to offer a certified qualification for the Tea industry.
Lucy Chappell - Managing Director & Head of Training Post Graduate Diploma Tea Management - National Institute of Tea Management, Darjeeling
Having always had a love for food and drink I started out studying Viti and Vini culture (wine) before progressing into the delights of the tea world, quite by accident, having stumbled across an advert for a role at Twinings. Although I had no experience with tea at all, I quickly fell in love and began to write master classes for customers and share my passion on a daily basis. Over the next couple of years I became the Twinings Tea Specialist, advising their customers on serving, new trends in tea and etiquette of the modern afternoon tea.
I then decided that I needed to learn more, so I sold my house and moved to Darjeeling to study at the National Institute for Tea Management, where I gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Tea Management. I also had the pleasure of working for an organic, tea plantation 'Makabari' before working and consulting on multiple independent tea gardens in India.
On my return to the UK, I returned to Twinings as a consultant with the view to opening my own tea school, and here I am doing just that. Throughout my journey so far I have had the pleasure of training and mentoring many other tea specialists who have gone on to have influential roles within premium retail and hospitality, both in the UK and internationally.
